Shambhala Day 2018 - Year of the Earth Dog

February 18th

Date details +

SHAMBHALA DAY marks the beginning of the New Year, and represents one of the most important traditions of Shambhala Buddhism. Based on the traditional Tibetan New Year’s celebration of Losar, the day is calculated astrologically according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, and changes every year to coincide with the annual lunar cycles.

This year, the date lands on Friday, February 16th, but in order accommodate more schedules, we will hold Shambhala Day on Sunday. Shambhala Day is a time for us to express the wealth and richness of our spiritual and cultural heritage through feasting, conviviality, elegance and pomp.

The schedule of the day is as follows:

    • 9:00-10:15 Group practice of the Elixir of Life (a.k.a the Birthday Sadhana), a short liturgy written by the Sakyong to welcome in the new year
    • 10:30-11:15 “State of the Center” address; an update on our Center, Welcoming of new Members, Officials, and the taking of Oaths, etc.
    • 11:15-11:30 I Ching consultation, an augury for our Center for the upcoming year
    • 11:30-12:00 Video of the Sakyong’s Shambhala Day address
    • 12:00-12:15 Fundraising Event
    • 12:00-2:00 Festive Lunch and socializing

Please register if you plan on attending - it would very much help us plan for food and seating!
